ABOUT
The Colorado New Play Festival, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Colorado, launched the first Youth Playwright Slam in 2022 as a way to give voice to aspiring young writers in the community. Students are mentored over several months to develop original stories and plays that are read on stage by professional actors as a kick off to the festival.
“When I’m done writing a story I feel complete,” Sofia, 15 years old.
Why encouraging our youth to write is important
Writing is a way for people to express and explore difficult emotions. COVID-19 has impacted our youth. Suicide rates and depression are up. Neither children nor adults fully understand the long term implications of the last two years . Writing is an important tool for utilizing creativity to take dreams, fears, joy and grief out of our minds and onto the page to share with others. By using professional actors to bring aspiring writer’s stories to life, our community can come together to share the most basic human emotions in a common space. The Youth Playwright Slam celebrates the talent in our community as Northwest Colorado youth share their stories, poems and plays with the world.
About the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Colorado – The Boys & Girls Club helps Routt County, Yampa Valley and Moffat County children realize their full potential in their communities.
